Temple Emunah, Lexington will
hold its annual Holocaust Memorial Service featuring commentaries and a
music program that reflect the question of faith after the Holocaust. The program is free and open to the public.
Many of us wrestle with the question of how people can pray to God, given the many tragedies that mankind has endured. For Jews, in particular, the Holocaust is ever challenging. The
very week before Holocaust Memorial Day, at the Passover Festive Meal – the "Seder" – Jews recite a prayer that
states that while Jews have faced many enemies who were intent on
destroying them, God has been and will always be here to save them. The
fact is that in spite of the Shoah, millions of Jews still celebrate
their lives as Jews – and that fact alone represents a
failure of those who have tried to destroy them.
The
music of the Holocaust Memorial Service on May 1 will include the 3rd
movement of Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms and the 1st movement
of Eric Zeisl's Requiem Ebraico. For this
service, Leon Gunther will conduct the Mak'haylah (the Temple Emunah
chorus), members of the Lexington United Methodist Church Chorus
(Jeanne Lucas, Director) and a small orchestral ensemble.
