Osteoporosis, a disease characterized by low bone density, will be the topic of a free discussion for women at the Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center (333 Nahanton Street) in Newton on Monday, September 28 from 7-8:15pm.
According to the Surgeon General, by 2020, one in two women and one in five men over age 50 are expected to suffer a fracture related to osteoporosis.
Risk factors for osteoporosis, screening options and how diet and lifestyle choices can influence bone health will be discussed.
Leading the session will be Dr. Tamara Rozental, an orthopedic surgeon at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). Her research focuses on fragility fractures of the upper extremities. Joining Dr. Rozental will be Kempland Walley, a clinical research associate in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at BIDMC. He is the lead researcher in a National Institutes of Health study focusing on bone fragility in postmenopausal women.
The talk is free and open to the entire community. For more information, contact 617-558-6459.
