Author Geraldine Brooks talks with WBUR's Robin Young about her remarkably ambitious new novel, The Secret Chord, which reimagines the life of one of the world’s most legendary figures, King David. Through the eyes of Batsheva, Mikal, the prophet Natan, his son Solomon, and others, we encounter — again and for the first time — the many sides of this charismatic leader: shepherd, giant-slayer, fugitive, king, poet, tyrant, lover, father. Brooks will talk about the writing of the novel, the role of the David story in Jewish and Western culture, and the complicated relationship between history, legend, and imaginative fiction. Brooks is the author of numerous novels, including March, Caleb’s Crossing, and People of the Book, and the recipient of many awards, including the Pulitzer Prize. Robin Young is the co-host of Here and Now on WBUR and one of Boston’s best-loved broadcast journalists.
