The Fair Share Tax Campaign and its Impact on Public Education
If you have been listening to conversations about public education in Massachusetts, you have probably heard Barbara Madeloni's name. Elected in May 2014 as president of the MTA, Ms. Madeloni focuses much of her activism around addressing the negative influences of corporate interests in public education. She has been particularly vocal around standardized testing and the disparity in education for students along lines of race and socio-economics. Before that, she was a professor at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst's School of Education where she began to gain attention for her activism against a proposed teacher evaluation system overseen by a for-profit education company. Read more about her previous activism and her current work in this interview.
The MTA is a strong supporter of the Raise Up MA campaign for the Fair Share Amendment,-which seeks to increase funding for public education and transportation through a tax increase on individual income over $1 million (read more about that here). And yes, this is the same campaign for which JALSA has pledged to gather 4,500 signatures!
Come and hear Ms. Madeloni speak about her work with the current fight for public education as well as its connection to the Fair Share Campaign.
