On the Use and Abuse of Power in Jewish Tradition
Begins Wednesday, October 21, 2015
All sessions held Wednesdays, 12:00-1:15 p.m.
CJP, 126 High Street, 9th Floor, Boston

Featuring Dr. Erica Brown

This series is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required.

Bring your lunch and join us for provocative learning and discussions with Dr. Erica Brown. From the Bible to the Talmud to Jewish philosophy, Jewish texts have focused on the nature of political power within the family, and within community and organizational governance structures.

This Genesis Forum will survey many of these texts and focus on fundamental questions about how power works, how it gets corrupted, and what we can do within a framework of ethics to keep personal power in check. Among the questions we’ll look at are:

  • What is the Jewish attitude to power generally?
  • Why does it seem so easy to abuse power?
  • How should we respond when religious figures abuse power?
  • What is the role of a follower in monitoring and curbing the power of leaders?

Our lunchtime learning will be infused with lively conversations, bringing the text to life. Bring your own lunch, if you’d like. Beverages are available.
