Tel Aviv's massive LGBTQ pride celebration in June was a joyous city-wide event for people of all ages and orientations. Yet that celebration turned to mourning weeks later, when an ultra-religious extremist stabbed participants in Jerusalem's pride parade, injuring five and killing Shira Banki, only 16 years old.
The dichotomy was clear. On the one hand, Israel's secular, open, and liberal society has made the country something of a haven for LGBTQ people. On the other, the hate crime at the Jerusalem Pride parade raises vital questions about life, liberty and tolerance in Israel's diverse society.
Join us on October 13 for this important event as we hear from Ruti Kadish, an Israeli who has been at the frontlines of the fight for LGBTQ rights and equality in Israel.
