"Empire, Nation-State, and Genocide"

October 23, 2015  | 4:00pm
Rose Library, Cohen-Lasry House
Clark University, 11 Hawthorne Street, Worcester, Mass

Speakers: Peter Holquist and Ronald Suny

In his latest book, Ronald Suny (University of Michigan) challenges the perception of the Armenian Genocide as part of the Young Turks’ plan to homogenize Anatolia in an effort to found a Turkish nation-state. Instead, his work supports the emerging notion that genocides of the late 19th and early 20th centuries emanated from the demographic reorganization of crumbling empires rather than nation state-building. Peter Holquist (University of Pennsylvania) adds to the conversation by challenging the Empire-Nation distinction. He contrasts the Young Turks’ policies with Russian plans in Galicia against Jews and in the Caucasus against Muslims.
