Join us for a rare opportunity to see a classic Yiddish film (with English subtitles) with the expert commentary of Prof. Joel Rosenberg, noted scholar of Jewish literature at Tufts University.
Mirele Efros, "the Jewish Queen Lear", is the masterpiece of influential Yiddish playwright Jacob Gordin. Mirele is a wealthy and pious widow whose devotion to her children extends to hand-picking a wife for her eldest son. Unfortunately, she gravely mistakes the young woman's character. The resulting conflict between the noble Jewish matriarch and her ungrateful, self-serving daughter-in-law provides both a cautionary tale and a lesson in the value of filial piety.
Enjoy and evening at the movies with popcorn and friendship at Nehar Shalom! Suggested donation: $5/person.
