FILM | Raise the Roof
Sunday, February 7, at 2 p.m.
Inspired by images of the magnificent wooden synagogues of eighteenth-century Poland—the last of which were destroyed by the Nazis—artists Rick and Laura Brown of Handshouse Studio set out to build a replica of the stunning Gwozdziec synagogue. Raise the Roof tells the story of their remarkable ten-year project, completed with a team of 300 artisans and students using only period hand tools and techniques. The replica is now the centerpiece of the new POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw.
2015, USA, 85 minutes, color, English and Polish with English subtitles. Director: Hilla Medalia.
JUST ANNOUNCED: Rick and Laura and their team will be at the Yiddish Book Center for the screening of Raise the Roof and will answer audience questions after the film.
