Maimonides School Kristallnacht Commemoration
Maimonides School’s commemoration of the 76th anniversary of the Kristallnacht pogrom will feature remarks on the role of American institutions responding to pleas from European academics in the 1930s.
Prof. Laurel Leff of Northeastern University will speak on “Well Worth Saving: How American Universities Selected Faculty Fleeing Nazi-Era Europe.” The program is scheduled for Saturday evening, Nov. 8 at 7:30 at the school, 34 Philbrick Road, Brookline.
Prof. Leff is known for her 2005 book, Buried by The Times: The Holocaust and America’s Most Important Newspaper. Her current research focuses on the lifelines American universities extended to people trying to flee Europe -- faculty positions that enabled refugees to immigrate outside of strict quotas.
