JP Flicks presents "Departures"

This Japanese film follows a young man who finds himself without a job and stumbles across work as a nōkanshi – a traditional ritual mortician. The film magnificently captures the universality of death, conveying one tradition's utmost respect for the deceased and the meaningful rituals it offers to support the family in the days after a death. Judaism has its own rituals around death and preparing the body for burial. Moving from the universal to our own particular, we will use this opportunity to discuss these Jewish rituals and their value to us as a Jewish community.
