Both Marx and Freud are quintessential sons of the Enlightenment, yet in somewhat hidden ways are also sons of Jewish tradition. An important book from some decades ago, John Murray Cuddihy's "The Ordeal of Civility," makes the case that Marx and Freud, among the first major Jewish thinkers to be accepted outside the ghetto, found masks and lies in mainstream civil society which their work helped reveal. For their brutal candor, both were vilified during their times and ever since, and yet the brilliance of their analyses is being revived today to help us understand crucially painful, puzzling, and threatening times. This class, taught by Dr. Gordie Fellman, begins March 23 and continues March 30 and April 6, 9:30 - 11:00 a.m.
