Based on an Israel Zangwill play, King of the Schnorrers by Robert Brustein is a comedy with a with a wonderful klezmer score by Hankus Netsky. A down-on-his luck Sephardic actor schnorrs a wealthy Ashkenazic movie producer out of his clothes, money, groceries and self-respect, in a hilarious sequence of con games. It also features a Romeo and Juliet love story set against the conflicts between the two Jewish sects. Tuneful and funny, it is a piece of history about the fading of the Yiddish Theatre.
