The Meaning of Shabbat in a Big Bang Universe

Start Date/Time: Saturday, February 4, 2012 9:00 AM
End Date/Time: Saturday, February 4, 2012 10:30 AM
Description: Congregation Beth El of Sudbury is pleased to announce a series of talks by Dr. Howard Smith, Senior Astrophysicist at Harvard and author of Let There be Light. As part of Beth El’s Scholar-in-residence program, Dr. Smith will lead a series of talks at Beth El titled, “Judaism and Cosmology Today: A Revolution in Relevance”. The series, taking place from Sunday January 29 through February 4, will teach how ancient Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism) and modern cosmology intersect and how both of these approaches together can enlighten us. Rabbi David Thomas is excited about the opportunity to host Dr. Smith at Congregation Beth El. “The conversation between science and religion is one of the most important dialogues of our time,” said Thomas. “As a cosmologist and observant Jew, Dr. Smith is uniquely qualified to engage us in an exploration of the ways in which anyone can embrace spirituality and reason without fear of contradiction.”

Dr. Smith lectures and teaches widely on the topic of science and religion, Judaism, cosmology, and modern physics, and does so to a broad audience including people from all religious faiths or atheistic perspectives, and people who normally have only a passing interest or knowledge in science or Jewish mysticism. One attendee from a talk by Dr. Smith in New York exclaims, "We cannot thank you enough for coming to our Temple and presenting the best-ever program we've had. It was exciting, eye- and mind-opening, and you are so gifted in making the mysterious clear and the wondrous even more than extra-ordinary...."

Each of the four talks will stand alone. All are free and open to the public. Please see our website for more information (bethelsudbury.org).
